New ambitions, growth and greater reach cannot be separated from the working environment. DMK’s new site on Maria-Cunitz-Straße 5, opposite Bremen Airport, demonstrates how that ambition can be translated into physical space. Above all, it highlights just how significant the difference is compared to the previous building. Where limits once defined everyday working life, there is now an environment designed to enable development.
The transformation is most visible in the working areas themselves. Instead of rigid structures, there are now spaces that encourage exchange, enable collaboration across teams and still offer quiet areas for focused work. That balance had previously been missing. Meeting rooms with names such as Light, Fresh or Dialoguereflect themes from within the company and contribute to an open atmosphere. “The Forum makes the new flexibility especially tangible,” says Andelie Romanek, Team Leader Customer & Commercial Services for commercial trainees. “Movable walls can transform one room into many, depending on what’s needed.” Flexibility is no longer a slogan. It has become reality.
The impact becomes obvious in everyday life. “Employees come to work with a smile,” says Eva-Maria Fahl, Recruiting Manager at DMK. The openness, brightness and flexible spaces create more possibilities for shaping the working day. Collaboration has changed noticeably. “We sit together in mixed and constantly changing teams. That means we naturally become aware of what other departments are working on as well. Thanks to the open spatial concept, the hurdle to approach colleagues is much lower.” Coordination happens more directly. Processes move faster. “For me, the feeling that we can achieve more together is reinforced every single day.”
The move marks a turning point. What was previously only possible to a limited extent has now become part of everyday life: flexible working, greater personal responsibility and spaces designed to support change. Processes, technologies and expectations are constantly evolving – and the new site creates the conditions needed to keep pace. A building alone cannot solve those challenges. But it can make dealing with them significantly easier. And that is exactly what has been achieved here.
At the same time, dedicated areas for concentration have been deliberately integrated into the concept. Think Tanks and Phone Boxes allow employees to work or make calls without interruption – something that simply did not exist before. The relationship people have with their workstations has also changed. Assigned desks are no longer the standard. “At first, it was certainly unusual for some people not to have a permanently assigned desk anymore,” says Fahl. “But by now, the excitement about the modern equipment and the attention to detail clearly outweighs that.” The new environment is increasingly becoming second nature.
